Spring Forward into Fire Safety

Spring is coming with Daylight Savings this weekend! According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, "Smoke alarms are proven life savers. There are more than 300,000 residential fires every year, so when there is a fire, smoke alarms buy families valuable escape time.

Unfortunately, about two-thirds of fire deaths take place in homes with no smoke alarms or with non-working smoke alarms. The most common reasons why alarms did not work were missing, disconnected, or dead batteries. Consumers need to make sure that they have a working smoke alarm.
For better warning of fire, consumers should install smoke alarms on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms. Replace batteries annually, and test the smoke alarms monthly. A good time to remember to replace batteries is when turning clocks ahead for daylight saving time on Sunday, March 8."

With Daylight Savings Time right around the corner fire departments everywhere are reminding us that it is a good time to change the batteries in our smoke alarms. If you don't remember the last time you changed the batteries in your smoke alarms, Daylight Savings is a great time to change the batteries so that you can easily know when you last changed the batteries. Scentsy Wickless Candles Leadership Cruise

In July of 2003, two moms who loved candles but didn't like the danger of open flames decided to design a safe alternative to fragrant wicked candles. Both of them loved scented candles, but they had small children and the threat of fire or injury was an enormous safety concern.

After months of research, they created a safe, beautiful, and creative alternative to a traditional wick and flame candle. Aromatic candles, heated in decorative warmers where the wax is melted by the heat of a 25 watt bulb, were the fragrance solution they had been looking for.

Scentsy, Inc., the authentic wickless candle company, was born. The concept is simple, and powerful. The products are heartwarming and current. Above all, they are safe. 10 Tips for Smoke Alarm Safety

Key components to any fire escape plan are having a Fire Escape Plan and having functioning smoke alarms. (See video) Testing and maintaining your smoke alarms to ensure that they are working

properly is essential as well as knowing and practicing your fire escape plan. Research from the Home Safety Council research shows that 97 percent of American homes have at least one smoke alarm and to ensure that your family will be effectively alerted to any fire dangers, the Home Fire Safety Council provided the following guidelines when installing and testing smoke alarms:

1. Only purchase smoke alarms that are listed by UL and carry the UL mark on packaging.
2. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement. Make sure there is an alarm near every sleeping area. For the best detection and notification protection, install both ionization - and photoelectric-type smoke alarms. Some models provided dual coverage. The type will be printed on the box or package.
3. The Home Safety Council recommends installing additional smoke alarms inside all bedrooms.
4. Smoke rises, so smoke alarms should be mounted high on walls or ceilings. Ceiling mounted alarms should be installed at least four inches away from the nearest wall; wall-mounted alarms should be installed 4 to 12 inches away from the ceiling. 5. Choose an installation location that is well away from the path of steam from bathrooms and cooking vapors from the kitchen, which can result in false, or nuisance alarms.
6. Don't install smoke alarms near windows, doors, or ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation.
7. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month, following the manufacturer's instructions, which typically involves pushing the "test" button on the face of the alarm cover. Install fresh batteries at least once a year.
8. The Home Safety Council recommends using hard-wired, interconnected smoke alarms with battery back-up. These alarms run on your household wiring and are tied in together so that if one alarm operates, they all signal together.
9. Smoke alarms should be replaced at least once every 10 years.

Different types of Smoke Alarms?

Key components to any home fire safety program are properly placed and functioning Smoke Alarms. Smoke Alarms need to be properly situated in your home and tested frequently to ensure effectiveness. But how many of us knew that there are different types of smoke alarms? Below is content provided by the National Fire Protection Association Smoke Alarm Fact Sheet regarding the different types of smoke alarms.
"The two most commonly recognized smoke detection technologies are ionization smoke detection and photoelectric smoke detection. Ionization smoke detection is generally more responsive to flaming fires and photoelectric smoke detection is generally more responsive to fires that begin with a long period of smoldering (called “smoldering fires”). For each type of smoke alarm, the advantage it provides may be critical to life safety in some fire situations.

Home fatal fires, day or night, include a large number of smoldering fires and a large number of flaming fires. You cannot predict the type of fire you may have in your home or when it will occur. Any smoke alarm technology, to be acceptable, must perform acceptably for both types of fires in order to provide early warning of fire at all times of the day or night and whether you are asleep or awake.

The best evidence has always indicated that either type of smoke alarm will provide sufficient time for escape for most people for most fires of either smoldering or flaming type. However, research is ongoing, and standards are living documents. If at any time, research points to a different conclusion, then that will lead to proposals for changes in the NFPA standard or the closely related Underwriters Laboratories standard for testing and approving smoke alarms. Both organizations currently have task groups looking at smoke alarm performance in the current home environment.

For best protection, it is recommended both (ionization and photoelectric) technologies be in homes. In addition to individual ionization and photoelectric alarms, combination alarms
that include both technologies in a single device are available."

Scentsy Be Fire Safe - Smoke Alarms

According to Home Safety Council research indicates that 97 percent of homes have at least one smoke alarm. But one smoke alarm may not be enough and should be on every level of your home and many recommend putting a smoke alarm in every room.

According to the Dept. of Homeland Security, having a working smoke alarm reduces one’s chances of dying in a fire by nearly half. Nearly one third of the residential fires and two-fifths of residential fatalities occur in homes with no smoke alarms.

Below are some guidelines from the Dept. of Homeland Security –

1. Place a smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside bedrooms. If you keep your bedroom doors closed, place a
smoke alarm in each bedroom.
2. Check smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button. If you cannot reach the button easily, use a broom handle.
3. Change the batteries in your alarms at least once a year – perhaps
when you change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time.
4. Teach children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do
– leave the building immediately by crawling low under the smoke
– when they hear it sound.
5. If cooking smoke sets off the alarm, do not disable it. Turn on the
range fan, open a window, or wave a towel near the alarm.
6. Do not remove the batteries to put in other appliances such as personal
stereos or games.
7. Smoke alarms wear out over time. Replace yours if it is 10 years
old or more.
8. Keep smoke alarms clean. Dust and debris can interfere with their
operation. Vacuum over and around your smoke alarm regularly.
9. Consider installing a 10-year lithium battery-powered smoke alarm,
which is sealed so it cannot be tampered with or opened.
10. Hard-wired smoke alarms with battery back-ups need to be tested
monthly and batteries replaced yearly.

As we start the new year it's a good time to sit down as a family and create a home fire safety and escape plan. To ensure that everyone in your home knows how to escape in case of a fire, you should practice your escape plan at least twice a year.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently released “Do’s and Don’ts of Holiday Decorating,” outlining how to have beautiful and safe holidays. It includes safety tips covering the proper installation and maintenance of trees and decorations, lights, candles and fireplaces. Following these safety tips can help to ensure that your holiday celebrations are beautiful and safe.

“Red Cross urges fire safety for holidays“

As we mentioned in our very first post, one of the reasons we started safecandlesbyscentsy.com is because safety is so important to us. Candle fire safety, to be specific. You might say we are even passionate about it.

We’ve been following national, regional and local news reports on fires and fire safety. As we expected, there are more articles on home fires now than there were a few weeks ago when we launched safecandlesbyscentsy.com. As we also expected, many of these home fires began with an unattended candle.

The good news is that there are also more local and regional resources posted on the steps to take to prevent fires in the home – not just this holiday season but year round.

“Red Cross urges fire safety for holidays” (12/18/08) in the Atlanta Citizen provides quick, concise information and tips on preventing home fires.

According to this article “…each year nearly 47,000 fires occur nationally during the holidays claiming more than 500 lives, causing more than 2,200 injuries, and costing $554 million in property damage. Many of these fires are caused by home heating sources, unattended cooking and candles.”

Scentsy Introduces the “Candle Circle of Safety”

According to the US Fire Administration, over 23,000 residential fires a year are caused by candles. These fires result in over 1500 injuries, 165 fatalities and nearly $400 million in property damage and loss.

Candle fires are reported more often during the holiday season than any other time of year. 4 out of the 5 days with the highest reported incidences of home fires are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. (The fifth day is Halloween.)

Many candle fires begin through inattention, and nearly half of all candle fires begin when a lit candle is placed too close to combustible material.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services developed the “Candle Circle of Safety” program to help prevent candle fires. They believe, as does Scentsy, that candle fire prevention begins with candle fire education, followed by practicing candle safety whenever you burn a candle.

Scentsy - Fire Doesn’t Take a Holiday

We are in the midst of the most important time of the year for home fire awareness and prevention. Because our flameless candle company is dedicated to families and built on the principle of safety, we chose December to launch a blog on this very issue. We want you to have as much candle safety information as possible so you can use candles safely, and minimize the threat of a candle-related fire.

Did you know there are more home fires in December and January than any other months of the year? These two months alone account for nearly 25% of fires in the home. 4 out of the 5 days with the highest reported incidences of home fires are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. (The fifth day is Halloween.)

While it is tragic, it is not exactly surprising that the holiday season is prime time for home fires. This is when we cook and bake; entertain family and friends; light candles for their pleasing scents and romantic ambiance, make cozy fires in our fireplaces; and plug in Christmas tree lights and other decorations.

We are busy with the hustle and bustle of our winter celebrations.
But fire doesn’t take a holiday.
Our flameless candle company was founded on the very principle of safety – candle safety to be specific. As you get ready for Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Year celebrations, here are 10 things you can do (or not do) to keep your home and family safe from the threat of candle-related fire.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep burning candles away from combustibles (curtains, bedding, table runners and clothing).
Don’t burn candles in a drafty place. This can cause rapid, uneven burning.
Keep wicks properly trimmed to ¼ inch each time you burn a candle.
Do not burn a candle all the way down. Discard candles when 2 inches of wax remain for a taper candle, or ½ inch of wax for a container or jar candle.
Place candleholders on a sturdy, heat-resistant surface.
Do not use candles as a light source in a power outage. Rely on flashlights instead.
Do not use candles as nightlights.
Keep candles, matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
Place burning candles at least 3 inches apart.

These tips are adapted from safety rules provided by the National Candle Association and the U.S. Fire Administration.
